CFRB 1010 Question of the Week
The Garden Show: Saturday, February 2
Caller: Elaine - Toronto

I have 3 amaryllis bulbs that I kept from last year. One of them has a flower stalk and it also has 7 or 8 small shoots emerging from the side. The second bulb is just growing leaves and the third bulb hasn't grown at all.

These bulbs all sound normal. The one that hasn't grown will take some patience and another 4 to 6 weeks to bloom. Keep them in a sunny window. Allow the soil to dry between waterings. The bulb which is flowering, the small shoots may develop into leaves once the blooms fade. When the blooms fade cut them off including the stem. Let the leaves grow and mature in the sun. Remember the leaves are the food factory of the bulb. As the leaves grow they add to the energy stored in the bulb. They take up the energy in the sun, convert it into sugar and push the sugar down to the bulb so it will bloom again.

Don't fertilize amaryllis bulbs unless they are finished flowering and are just in the leafy stage. Then you can use some 20-20-20 once every 2 to 3 weeks.
