How do I plant and care for a cedar hedge? |
 |
Planting a cedar hedge starts with digging a trench at least 12 inches deep. You should add peat moss, bone meal and manure to the soil in the trench. Plants should be spaced 12" apart in the trench. Back fill the soil in the trench half way and then fill with water. Add a transplant liquid to your water to encourage rapid root development. Allow the water to drain away before filling in the rest of the trench. Gently firm the soil around each cedar.
Pruning your hedge is very important in order to train plants into a dense and healthy hedge. Be sure to prune hedges wider at the base than at the top. This allows sun exposure throughout the entire hedge. Begin trimming each year once the new growth is at least 6" over the old pruned level. Once your hedge has reached your preferred height you must keep pruning at the same level. Do not allow more than 4" of growth before pruning. |

Do you have a homemade formula that I could mix up to spray on my plants, pansies etc to keep the deer from eating them at night? I have bought the deer fence, but it is so expensive. What about a hot pepper mixture? Will it hurt my plants? |

“A serious problem in rural areas, deer can also pose a problem in some suburban areas. Deer, which have an acute sense of smell, are very wary of human beings and animals such as dogs. For this reason, pantyhose "bags" filled with two or three handful of human or dog hair and placed every 3 to 4.5 meters (10 to 15 ft.) in the problem are will help to discourage deer from entering. Another deterrent is fragrant soap, place some slivers of soap in pantyhose or onion bags and hang these as you would hair-filled bags.” For more information on this topic check out this article in Mark’s Library: Stop Pests in their Track. |
