Canada and
the United States are divided into zones that reflect
climate, based on a region’s average annual
minimum temperature. Hardiness zones range from
the coldest at Zone 1 to the warmest at Zone 11.
There are often variances within a zone that are
called microclimates. For example, your garden may
be near a body of water that makes the land closest
to it cooler in the summer and a warmer in the winter
than the areas that surround it. Or, if your region
is in Zone 6 but your garden is on the north side
of a large hill, you may have a microclimate of
Zone 5 in that area of your backyard.
Always check the suitability of plants, shrubs and
trees to your hardiness zone — if you’re
